A new hotline is now available for Palm Springs residents to call if they
experience problems with vacation or event homes in their neighborhood.
As part of the City’s new Vacation Rental and Event House Outreach Program,
the Office of Neighborhood Involvement recently sent out postcards to
residents informing them about a new phone number they can call if there is a
disturbance.
The phone number, (760) 833-7988, was established as a way to empower
neighbors to call with concerns regarding noise, parties, trash and other
property issues. Anyone with concerns must call during the event and provide
the address of the property.
When a resident calls, an answering service will pick up the line and register
the complaint as well as notify the property owner or vacation rental service that
the issue must be taken care of within 45 minutes before police are contacted.
“It’s a great way for residents who have concerns to notify the property owner
or rental service,” said Lee Husfeldt, Director of the Office of Neighborhood
Involvement. “We hope our residents will use this hotline whenever they
encounter a problem… so that it can be taken care of as quickly as possible.”

We have an offical vote regarding changing the name of our neigborhood organization to something other than "Ruth Hardy Park Neighborhood Organization". The vote was 45 against and 15 in favor of changing the name, so the issue is resolved for now. Review the comments in our Forum section here online, or click here to see a synopsis of the issues with some of the reasons for and against a name change.

The Desert Water Agency is proposing a 17% rate increase (on top of the 17% increase two years ago). Your only
way to protest is to submit a form which must be received no later than the end of the hearing to be held at the
Desert Water Agency Board Room, 1200 Gene Autry Trail South, Palm Springs, Tuesday, June 3rd, starting at 8:00am.
A copy of the form is attached. A
handout from the Desert Water Agency called "Facts About The Rate Increase", says in one section that you must put
either your DWA account number or your Assessor's Parcel Number on the form. In another section, it
says "If you are a renter who pays the water bill, you will only need to provide your Desert Water Account Number".
So, if you are an owner, be safe and put both.
Jim Franklin personally went to the Desert Water Agency with the copied protest ballot and reported that "The person
behind the counter made a call and said the ballot is just fine as a photo copy."

The Office of Neighborhood Involvement's first Eco-Friendly Landscape Tour was held on Saturday, April 19, 2008,
and was huge success. Approximately 95 people participated.
And on Sunday, the 20th, the Horticultural Society held a similar tour with different properties.
Twelve properties were on the two tours, and three of the properties were in the Ruth Hardy Park Neighborhood
Organization area!
Both tours were interesting, informative and inspiring.

Street Blades: on-going
We have pretty much decided the overall design of the street blades: brown background, white lettering, and
"Ruth Hardy Park" with just "Neighborhood" underneath (thanks, Michael Kennedy), but after meeting after meeting,
we are getting down to details.
Now we are looking at logos, fonts and spacing:
1). Originally, the City thought that we couldn't distort the offical City logo, so we designed a separate logo that
said "Neighborhood Organization" around the offical City logo. Since then, it was decided we could change the City
logo to say "Palm Springs Neighborhood". Both options are presented.
2). Font: there are a couple of samples presented, but we are not limited to these.
3). Spacing on "Neighborhood": this is just an opinion on what is most appealing to your eye.
Please check out the new samples, and
vote in the new poll(s).
And remember, we are not limited to these choices.
Thanks.
The Deepwell Neighborhood Association is polling their members to see if they are willing to incur
the expense of burying power and telephone cables. One of our members suggested that we do the same, and since
it's certainly a relevant issue, we are.
However, keep in mind as Sean Warren states: "The city currently has
no plans for the RHP area so if residents want to do it they are basically on their own. I am told it can cost
anywhere from 10-15 thousand."
Submit your opinion.
Saturdays, 11am-2pm - Downtown Palm Springs
Every Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., musical entertainment will drift
throughout the downtown, accompanying strollers, shoppers and diners. It’s all
part of a marketing strategy to attract people to Downtown.
"The intent of the program is to provide the public with a sense of place and an
entertainment ‘vibe’ as they stroll the downtown," said Tammy Perezchica,
Downtown Administrator. "It is one more reason, if you didn’t already have one,
to revisit the great opportunities Palm Springs has to offer."

PSNIC Garden Walk
Planning continues on PSNIC Garden Walk. We had thought about having it April 12, but now we're considering
sometime in May (not May 10th which is our picnic) or early June. We've learned that people are reluctant to
have their gardens on a tour open to the public because they are concerned about security. So, we've regrouped
and come up with a slightly different idea.
If your garden a showpiece of eco-friendly landscaping, the PalmSprings Neighborhood Involvement Committee (PSNIC)
wants you, and your garden, to participate in the First Annual Eco-Friendly Landscape Tour.
PSNIC members want to showcase eco-friendly landscaping and are soliciting entries. Residents who have
drought-tolerant landscaping in their front yards should contact Lee Husfeldt, Director of Neighborhood and
Community Relations, by Monday, March 10, to participate.
"There are beautifully landscaped properties in Palm Springs that showcase some wonderful desert plants,” said
Husfeldt. “I'm hoping that by featuring these eco-friendly landscaped properties, we'll not only be publicly
admiring what these homeowners have done, but we'll be giving people ideas as to what they can do with their yards."
The landscape tour, which would occur in May or early June, would be open to the public at no charge. A committee
would select seven to 12 properties to be highlighted on the tour. Eco-friendly landscapes would be photographed
for the Office of Neighborhood Involvement Web site and featured at an upcoming City Council meeting.
For more information, or to submit your garden, contact Husfeldt at 323.8255, or via e-mail at
Lee.Husfeldt@palmsprings-ca.gov.
Street Blades - Revisions
The street blade design that Michael Kennedy sent us (the one with 'Neighborhood Organization' &
'ruthhardypark.org' beneath the name) was most favored in our poll, but we have made some revisions:
1) Since they do not own it and cannot control the content, the City will not approve a sign with a web site on it
that is not theirs.
2) Also, Some people suggested that 'Neighborhood Organization' was inappropriate since it is the Ruth Hardy Park
'Neighborhood' with or without an organization, while others believed it would be good to promote the organization,
so we thought we would look at both.
Michael has had another go at it, and we are looking for further input. Please check out the new designs, and vote in the new poll.
Thanks.
Saturday, March 29th, 5:00pm-8:00pm - 1091 Paseo El Mirador
The Ruth Hardy Park Neighborhood Organization is having a Cocktail Party/Social from 5pm to 8pm on Saturday, March 29th at 1091 Paseo El Mirador. Come and have cocktails and hor 'devours and meet your neighbors. Free for members. A $5.00 donation is requested of non-members. Please mark March 29th on your calendar.
Worst Streets
The Palm Springs Neighorhood Involvement Committee (formerly the Neighorhood Involvement Committee) is looking for all Neighborhood Organizations to identify the two worst streets in need of repair in their area. If you know a street or two that you'd like to have considered, please make a comment in our forum.
Picnic - May 10th
The NIC Picnic Planning Committee is now proposing to have the picnic on Saturday, May 10th, from 11:30am to 2:30pm in Ruth Hardy Park. As you may know, it was orginally planned for March 8, but there were several conflicts in schedules and concerns about the weather, so now the group is now looking at the May date. There will be a report at the NIC Feb.14th meeting with more details, but circle May 10th on your calendar.
Street "Blades" - continued
We have a new design for the street blades submitted by member Michael Kennedy which we would like you to consider.
(Thanks Mike!) We don't know if the City is set on it's current design, but lets see what people want and we can check
with the City. Click here to see the various designs.
We have also added a section on the web site for gathering opinions (political polls nothwithstanding), and the street
sign blades are our first attempt to use it. Click here to go to Polls.
We appreciate your feedback.
re. Burglary
One of our neighbors on Alejo Road had their home burglarized
last week, mid-day. The MO was similar to the other break-ins in our
neighborhood a few weeks back.
They kicked in the door from the yard leading into the garage and
stole items from their garage. When they opened the door to the laundry
room the alarm went off and scared them off.
Street "Blades"
The City, through the efforts of the Neighborhood Involvement Committee and the Office of Neighborhood
Involvement, will be installing street "blades" (signs above the street name signs) to identify the various
"Neighborhoods".
As the Neighborhood Organization, we can choose the name of the area and the color of the blades. While
"Ruth Hardy Park" is most straightforward, there is concern that visitors will mistake the signs as directions
to the actual park. And since "Ruth Hardy Park Neighborhood Organization" is too long to fit on the signs,
we have come up with a couple of alternatives.
The color of the blades can be anything but green (the color of the street name signs) or "State-Road-Yellow".
We have put together a few sample blades with various names and colors (we tried blue and the colors from the "RHP"
logo).
We would appreciate any feedback you can offer on the name and the color. What would you like to see to identify
our neighborhood?
Click here to check out the samples.
